"If I was raped, I would have the baby and think of it as God making a blessing out of something bad", the former comedian stated in the October 2 episode of The Victoria Jackson Show. When Stern asks Jackson her thoughts on gay marriage, she responds with: "I have gay friends ... I don't make their identity their sexuality. To me, he's my fun, theatre-loving, funny friend ... why is his identity his sexuality... [but] I don't think there's such a thing as gay marriage. The definition of marriage is man and woman." When Stern suggests the definition of marriage should be changed, Jackson responds with no, "that would make God mad."

On August 19, 2012, Todd Akin, a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives and candidate in the 2012 U.S. Senate elections in Missouri, during remarks on rape and abortion, made the claim that women victims of what he described as "legitimate rape" rarely experience pregnancy from rape.

Akin's remarks were strongly condemned by some Republicans. Mitt Romney said they were "inexcusable, insulting, and frankly, wrong." and called for Akin to step down, as did Paul Ryan.
