The U.S. Coast Guard has recovered the body of a woman from the HMS Bounty replica sinking. Claudene Christian, 42, was a crew member on the HMS bounty, a replica of an 18th century ship. It now means 15 of the 16 crew members of the iconic boat are accounted for - with 63-year-old captain Robin Walbridge yet to be found.
On Oct. 25, the post on the Bounty Facebook page read, “Bounty will be sailing due East out to sea before heading South to avoid the brunt of Hurricane Sandy.” Another post that day read, “Happy Birthday to Captain Robin Walbridge...with Special Hugs & Kisses from his Family, Shelly, John and Tara.”
The ship was featured in the 1962 film Mutiny on the Bounty and two of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. The three-masted, 180-foot (55-meter) ship, built for the 1962 movie, “Mutiny on the Bounty,” sank.
Christian appeared to revel in her adventures on the seas, according to news reports. “I am in LOVE with my ship … BOUNTY,” she wrote on Twitter in July. Earlier, in June, she had tweeted: “I had a tough day, lost in the sails But it was sunny, warm & I am on a TALL SHIP AT SEA. It's a 'Bountyful' life.”
According to the Los Angeles Times, the ship's generators failed and the vessel began taking on water, and later on that evening the crew both sent out and eventually rescinded a distress call to the Coast Guard at 6:30 p.m.
Christian's mother, who is also called Claudene, said the ship began taking on water after a generator went out on the ship on Sunday night. The U.S. Coast Guard flew into the hurricane's outer bands and plucked the surviving crew members from two lifeboats.
Christian's body was later pulled from the sea, but Waldridge remained missing Tuesday. At least 18 people were killed in the city, according to Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The storm also caused widespread damage in neighbouring New Jersey, where homes and businesses along the coast sustained extensive damage.
The New York Stock Exchange says it will also re-open after two days' closure, as will the Nasdaq exchange. The last time the stock exchange shut down for two days was in 1888.
