Alvin Tan and Vivian Lee blog Scandal: NUS Terminates Blogger's Scholarship

About two weeks ago, Malaysian law student Alvin Tan Jye Yee is faced a disciplinary investigation at the National University of Singapore (NUS) after posting explicit photos of himself and his girlfriend on his blog.

And now, the news has come that Education Minister Heng Swee Keat has described the behaviour of sex blogger Alvin Tan as "reprehensible and unbecoming of a scholar". Alvin Tan, 24, a law student at the National University of Singapore (NUS), and his girlfriend Vivian Lee, 23, have been heavily criticised in both countries for the revealing blog called 'Sumptuous Erotica'.

Education Minister Heng Swee Keat slammed the behaviour of NUS ASEAN law scholar and sex blogger, Alvin Tan, saying his recent acts were “reprehensible and unbecoming of a scholar”. Minister Heng made the comments in Parliament on Monday, reported The Straits Times.

When the couple started their blog in September, they had a small following, mostly foreigners. But threedays into the postings and after more pictures and videos were uploaded, Singaporean and Malaysian Internet users got wind of it.

A NUS spokesman said in its statement that the university's board of discipline had concluded that Mr Tan's "inappropriate conduct was detrimental to the reputation and dignity of the university". Fellow students say he is reliable but not very sociable. An NUS law graduate, who declined to be named, said: "We weren't particularly close but he is very reliable and dependable when it comes to work."

Few days ago, Alvin Tan said in an interview with the Malaysian media, “My scholarship saved me $50,000 in tuition fees and $6,000 in living expenses yearly. I do not have to pay a single cent in Singapore. I don’t really care if NUS take action against me. I am prepared to be expelled. Anyway, I have set up my own company here (in Malaysia) and is financially secure.”

The Singapore Straits Times reported that Tan might get into trouble when he returned to Singapore. Quoting lawyer Bryan Tan of Keystone Law Corp, the daily said Tan might be hauled up for breaching the Films Act for producing and uploading the raunchy videos.

In a video posted on YouTube, Lee said, "We actually shut down the blog because of family pressure. Yes, we will continue doing what we love doing. But it's more of a question of timing. We probably won't continue again so soon from now."

Tan went to Singapore under an ASEAN scholarship in 2004 and attended Xinmin Secondary School and Raffles Junior College before he went to NUS. He is based in Kuala Lumpur, where he has an online business. The couple certainly have recognition now, but perhaps not the kind they were after. Jye Yee has been suspended from university and faces losing his scholarship.
