Tributes from across the world are being paid to a 15-year-old girl
from Canada who killed herself after being bullied online. She first
started her spiral into depression after being intimidated into sending a
picture of her breasts to an anonymous man on Facebook when she was
just a seventh grader.
Meantime, media from around the world, including online publications in England, the United States, Australia and Asia, have picked up the tragic tale. Anonymous published the name and address of a Vancouver-area man that the group claims was bullying and preying on Todd via the internet.
Amanda’s mother Carol said her daughter chose ‘Stay Strong’ because that’s what Demi Lovato, an American pop singer, X-Factor judge and anti-bullying advocate has tattooed on her wrist. The teenager changed schools repeatedly but this did not stop the bullying and she was physically attacked by classmates.
After a violent encounter with another girl, she wrote that she went home and drank bleach.
“She could be very funny,” said cheer teammate Alexa Ishikawa. “One afternoon she convinced me her father was Bill Gates.” The images ended up being sent to family and friends, and she described how she suffered anxiety, major depression and turned to drugs and alcohol and even tried to kill herself twice.
A concerned citizen contacted the organization last November to report that images of Todd were being circulated online, said spokeswoman Signy Arnason. Since Amanda’s death, the home has been filled with family and friends, offering condolences, bringing food and flowers and their remembrances of Amanda.
The last card on the YouTube video reads: "I have nobody. I need someone. My name is Amanda Todd."
In a comment below the video, Amanda wrote that she was not posting the video for attention. The cruelty that’s present when people harass each other through profiles on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites has been an issue many have struggled to deal with.
