'Godmother of cocaine' Griselda Blanco shot dead in Colombia

Griselda Blanco, who lived as the "godmother of cocaine", ruthlessly ordering scores of bloody murders and violent revenge attacks as she plotted the course of Miami's infamous drug wars, was shot to death in Medellin by a motorcycle-riding assassin Monday.

There are millions of Web users who are trying to know the real reason of her death. The Miami Herald cites El Colombiano newspaper reports that one man fired two bullets into her head, ironically, executing her in the type of "motorcycle assassination" she has been credited with inventing.

Known as the “Godmother” of the cocaine racket, she had up to 20 aliases, and unsubstantiated lore said she ordered some 250 murders. The Univision and El Colombiano report that 69-year old "Godmother of Cocaine" was fatally shot as she left a butcher's shop in western Medellin Monday afternoon.

Then-director of DEA international operations Michael Horn said while reacting on the news, "To foster her reputation as the 'Godmother' of cocaine, [Blanco] named her fourth son Michael Corleone, after the fictional mob character portrayed in the movie 'The Godfather."

Blanco, who was deported from the US in 2004 after serving almost two decades in jail in New York and Florida for racketeering and murder, Nelson Andreu, a former Miami homicide detective who had investigated her, said, "It’s surprising to all of us that she had not been killed sooner because she made a lot of enemies."
