Apple announces made of glass iPhone 5: larger, faster, 4G LTE

Schiller said in the press conference which was held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on September 12, 2012 in San Francisco, California. Schiller told crowds that iPhone 5 will have a battery with eight hours of talk time and eight hours of Web browsing.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said while talking about the new iPhone, "It's an absolute jewel. It's the most beautiful product we've ever made." iPhone 5 be 7.6mm thin and weigh just 112g, making it 18 per cent lighter than the iPhone 4S.

The video camera captures 1080p HD quality. Front-facing camera features 720p support, backside illuminated sensor, and FaceTime works over 3G with iOS 6. Schiller told the crowd that the iPhone was still using the same connection type that Apple introduced in 2003 for the iPod.

Apple has sold more than 243 million iPhones since the product launched in 2007. For the first time, the iPhone has gotten a new "Lightning" connector which replaces the familiar connector. The iPhone 5 will go on sale on Sept. 21, starting at $199 for the 16-gigabyte version with a new two-year contract.

A new app called Passbook also allows people to collect store cards, tickets and other information in a single app. The price of iPhone 5 will be the same as for the 4S at launch. 16, 32 and 64GB at $199, $299 and $399 respectively.

The handset also uses a new, smaller, socket for its charger. This means owners will need to use an adapter to plug the device into existing speakers and other equipment.

Schiller said more, "This is the most accurate display in the industry. The touch sensors are integrated right into the display itself. We removed a layer and made it sharper. This is the world's most advanced display, and I couldn't be prouder of it."

Apple also showed off a connector allowing people to use their existing chargers and accessories. The handset will use iOS 6, and dumps Google’s maps for Apple’s own.

Schiller showed off a photograph captured by the new phone that he said was 28 megapixels. Ahead of the announcement, Wall Street analysts predicted that the iPhone 5 would set sales records.
